Washington's Prayers & Washington's Last Will and Testament.

The Winter at Valley Forge. The War of Independence. The First Presidency of the newly-formed United States. The man who participated in all of these—so revered by students of history and by Americans everywhere—was George Washington. Here in Washington's Prayers, Washington shows us the secret of his greatness—his dedication to and dependence upon God.

Author W. Herbert Burk wrote at the turn of the last century, "So far as most Americans know, the Prayer at Valley Forge was the result of the direst need, and not the evidence of Washington's constant practice, or of a deep-seated principle of worship. Without the due appreciation of his prayerful spirit I believe no one can really understand the man." Christian Heritage Publishing brings this book back to the shelves of today's readers. With a history of Washington's Christian devotion, as well as photographs of his own handwritten prayers, followed by a transcript, Washington's Prayers reveals the side of our first President often ignored by today's history.

This special edition of Washington's Prayers also includes The Last Will and Testament of George Washington. Last Will is the words of both George and Martha Washington with their original spellings as they wrote their final wishes. From George's property holdings in several states to the treasured pewter and mourning rings of the eighteenth century described by Martha, history buffs, those who have enjoyed a trip to Mount Vernon, or anyone who wishes to learn more about the Washington's everyday life can envision the items described by two of our most beloved American figures.

Old-Time Revivals

The Hand of God moving in great revivals have always brought great change to the lives of men.  From "The Puritan Fire" to the "Aberdeenshire Revival" this book chronicles some of the notable--as well as lesser-known--revivals of the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries.  Learn of the Puritans in England, who found strength and new life in the Word of God--of one of their pastors, Richard Baxter, who invited every member of his congregation to his house, where he earnestly sought their faith in Christ.  Read of the Great Awakening, where such men as John Wesley and George Whitefield preached to crowds of people in England and America, and of David Brainerd's missionary work with the American Indians.  Read also of the Great Missionary Revival, the American Awakening, the Ulster Revival of 1859 and more.  Illustrated.

Excerpt from book:

"The work is abidingly associated with the name of William M'Culloch, minister of the Parish Church. He was not at all a 'popular' preacher. His delivery was slow and cautious, but his message was intensely Biblical. He rose at five that he might revel in the riches of Divine Truth. He abounded in charity, but, above all, he was a man of prayer. He loved the secret place, and he was ever encouraging his people to unite in praying bands, and to make the chief burden of their petitions the revival of God's work."

Christian Heroes and Martyrs,
from the celebrated work by John Foxe,
and other eminent authorities.

Christian Heroes and Martyrs opens with an account of the Christian's Example—Jesus Christ. It is from Christ that all the following martyrs derived strength to stand for God in time of greatest adversity—time when it was a choice between life and death, a choice between following Christ to their deaths or denying Him to retain their lives. These are their stories, the stories of just some of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their love for God and His truth. From early church figures such as Peter and Andrew to 16 th century figures such as Thomas Cranmer and John Rogers who lived during the rising Protestant Reformation, these stories testify to their faith in Christ. This 2007 reprint edition includes sixty illustrations from its original publication in 1895 and derives the basis for many of its accounts from the great historian of Christian martyrology, John Foxe.

The main idea of the book has been to give a fair picture of Martin Luther – his words and actions – and to show, in a measure, how they gradually affected England, as well as what was the state of England when his voice began to be heard in Germany....”

Excerpt 2: “Far away in the wilds of Saxony, on the border of a great forest, lived an honest miner and his wife Gretha. He was a smith as well as a miner, and worked very hard to support his wife and children. His name was Hans Lutter, or Luther.  ....On the 10th of November, 1483, at the village of Eisleben, was born a son, whom they named Martin, in honor of the saint enrolled on that day in the Romish calendar....

The Year of Grace: A History of the Ulster Revival of 1859

Author: Gibson, Rev. William

Year: 1909/2010

Publisher: Christian Heritage Publishing

Place: Hagerstown, Maryland

Edition: Jubilee Edition, with introductory note by the Right Hon. Thomas Sinclair, Belfast

Description: Originally published by Oliphant, Anderson & Ferrier in Edinburgh & London, in 1909. Newly republished edition by Christian Heritage Publishing in 2010. Pages in larger facsimile, perfect bind, newly designed color cardstock covers.

Contents: Following a time of spiritual deadness in Ireland, prayer meetings by sincere Christians prompted a historic revival with many making lasting choices to accept and follow Christ. Prayer meetings soon spread throughout Great Britain. This book is their story as told in the early 20th century, and concludes with records on the revival’s lasting effects. 256pp.

More History of the Ulster Revival: Located in the northern portion of Ireland, Ulster was home to Antrim County, a place favorable to Christian revival. In this county a Sunday School was begun around 1855 which had such a good effect on the children attending that regular meetings of prayer and Scripture reading were organized for adults – soon called the Sabbath School Teachers’ Prayer Meeting. Word spread and attendance grew. The meetings focused solely on Christ and the cross, setting aside divisiveness. Four dedicated Christian men also began to meet at Kells schoolhouse about two months later and to hold prayer meetings there. These were increasingly attended, and are now considered the beginnings of the revival. Other prayer meetings were held around the country—some of which dwindled at first but soon increased in attendance as a faithful kept them up. These prayer meetings followed a time of spiritual deadness in Ireland, and rekindled the spirit of revival in the country. Many had been anxious about spiritual salvation as well, and had found peace with God through their attendance at the prayer revivals. The revival followed the Second Great Awakening in America, and also spread to England and Scotland.

Excerpt: “Faith grew. Hope brightened. ‘The power of prayer' began to be known and felt and seen. The spring communion came on. Throughout the extensive parish, consisting of some thousand families, it was generally known that lately persons had been turned to the Lord among them, some moral, and some wildly immoral. The services were peculiarly solemn. The Master's presence seemed to be recognised, and His call heard. “ –From Chapter II, “The Beginnings of the Revival.”
